HIP-HOP SPOTLIGHT

                                                           YOUNG ROYAL

Young Royal has been evolving his gift of rapping ever since he started around the age of four. Born Lewis Craig McDonald Jr. in the Hill District of Pittsburgh Pennsylvania, Young Royal's main inspiration came from his father. His Father was a talented local MC in Pittsburgh and passed over his gift to Young Royal. He also became influenced by rappers Tupac Shakur, Notorious B.I.G, KRS-One, Kanye West, J.Cole, Wale and a long list of other talented Musicians. When Royal was four years old, his father recorded him on a tape recorder saying words and putting them together in a poetic form, after that he knew his son was destined to be a great MC. As time went on Young Royal quickly developed his skills. He wrote his first official rap when he was seven years old and started rapping it for his peers in elementary school. Once Royal set in his mind that rap was what he wanted to do, he quickly began taking it seriously. He wrote his first real song when he was eight and named it "Hot Ride". Later on, he and his cousin Cocaine Keeton formed a group. As time went on, they added two more additions to the group, Grimey and Keisha. The group name became Dream Squad and they began recording songs together on a computer with a microphone. As they got older, the group went their separate ways but remained in close contact with each other. Cocaine Keeton and Grimey decided to focus more on producing while Royal remained focused on rapping. Once Royal hit high school, he was already a very fierce MC but he realized he had a lot of competition. He began battling other MC's to show he was the best. To this day, his record remains flawless. Time passed and Royal realized he had to start developing a fan base by recording songs. His dad purchased him studio equipment and Royal took full advantage. He began recording songs and spreading them to his friends. Once people saw how talented he was, his fan base grew. Now at 21 years old, Royal is very grateful for the support he receives. “As an Hip-hop artist it's hard to make it big in Pittsburgh but thanks to great influences such as Wiz Khalifa and Mac Miller, I am hoping to secure my spot on the throne as one of the Hottest Young MC's to ever bless the microphone.
FIRST QUESTION, WHO OR WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO PURSUE A MUSIC CAREER?
Young Royal: my main inspiration came from my father, at a young age he introduced me to hip-hop and helped me understand the culture. He would always play, KRS-One, Rakim, Ice-Cube...just to name a few! When I was four years old he recorded me on a tape player saying words on a microphone, of course i wasn't rhyming or anything but just the fact I was on the mic at such a young age made it clear that this is what I should be doing! I picked up the violin in 3rd grade and played all the way through high-school, so it's not just Hip-Hop I've been around MUSIC my whole life!

FIRST QUESTION, WHO OR WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO PURSUE A MUSIC CAREER?

YOUNG ROYAL:
my main inspiration came from my father, at a young age he introduced me to hip-hop and helped me understand the culture.

IN ONE WORD DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE OF RAP, THEN TELL US WHY  IT FITS YOU?

YOUNG ROYAL:
I honestly don't have a certain style when it comes to my music, i don't like to categorize myself as a "rapper".  I honestly don't even like calling myself a rapper.  I consider myself an Artist!  I feel like when you call yourself a "rapper" your limiting yourself to a certain group or type of people, whereas an Artist can touch anybody and everybody! But, if I had to put a certain stamp on it, I would label my music as REAL because everything I do comes from my heart and when its from your heart its REAL!

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE A SESSION WITH YOUNG ROYAL RATHER JAMMING OUT ON STAGE OR IN THE STUDIO?

YOUNG ROYAL:
a session with me can vary depending on the mood or how i feel.  Sometimes it can be like the movie "The Hangover" because it's like i'm putting all the pieces together as i go!  lol BUT usually i always go into the studio ready to work!  I like to keep positive people and vibes around me, a lot of love, a lot of energy, leave the door cracked so God can creep through and I go to work! Everytime i got into the booth I like to do at least 3-4 songs a session...I GRIND! lol...as far as performing goes, the stage is my home, that's where i'm most comfortable I been performing since I was like 7!  I was involved in theater in elementary school so i'm no stranger to the lights, the stage, the crowd, the feeling...I love to give the people a show! something they can remember forever. something amazing.

IN THE FUTURE WHEN PEOPLE SPEAK ON HIP HOP AND YOUR IN THE MIX, WHAT IS IT THAT YOU WOULD WANT THEM TO SAY?

YOUNG ROYAL:
"He changed my life", "He inspired me", "He changed the world"...these are just a select few of things I would want people to say about me when its all said and done.  I make my music for the people! its totally selfless!   My goal with my music is to change the world!  Tupac Shakur is my all-time favorite artist, he said "I'm not saying i'm gonna rule the world, or i'm gonna change the world, but I guarantee I will spark the brain that will change the world!"...I believe that me and the people around me are meant to be that brain that can change the world!  I wanna touch people's lives and have an impact on the world.  I always said I could do a show in front of 10,000 people, 9,999 of those people could walk away with nothing...but if i'm able to get 1 person to walk away with something i'll be happy!  The spoken word is the power of the universe so us as artist need to use that power to make a positive difference and change the world for the better!

LAST QUESTION, WHAT IS IT THAT YOU WOULD WANT TO TELL ARTIST WHO ARE REACHING FOR A SPOT IN THE MUSIC WORLD?

YOUNG ROYAL:
Stay hungry, stay humble, always remember you have the power to change the world, change it for the better!

WELL I HAVE TO SAY IT WAS A PLEASURE AND WE APPRECIATE YOUR TIME...

 YOUNG ROYAL:
No thank you guys for having me! I appreciate it!!!
